A partial list of spatial and tabular datasets compiled by the DWA Project are listed below.

Angler Information


Blue Ribbon Trout Streams


This file was created from an event theme using the NHD (1:100,000 & 1:24,000). A Blue Ribbon Trout Stream is defined and managed by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. To be a "Blue Ribbon Trout Stream", the stream must meet the following criteria (excerpted from a MDNR pamphlet, unknown date): be one of Michigan's best trout streams; be able to support excellent stocks of wild resident trout; have the physical characteristics to permit fly casting but be shallow enough to wade; produce diverse insect life and good fly hatches; have earned a good reputation for providing an excellent (quality) trout fishing experience; and have excellent water quality.

Boat Launch Sites


A set of 2 tables which contains information on the DNR and Non-DNR boat launch sites throughout the state of Michigan. Initial information provided by the Michigan Department of Parks and Recreation.

Master Angler


Tables in the Lakes Database are linked to the MDNR's Fisheries Division databases. These tables contain information on the record catches throughout the state of Michigan. To use this set of information for locating specific data, you will need to utilize the queries in ACCESS. Each of the tables in the Lakes Database that pertains to the Master Angler information begins with "FIS_Master_Angler_*".

Michigan Trout and Salmon Designations - 2003


The trout and salmon fishing regulations for the state of Michigan are found in this directory. The trout streams (Type I-VII Streams) and trout lakes (Type A-F Lakes) are represented. Research Lakes and streams are inlcuded as well. These data are provided by the Michigan DNR Fisheries Division.


Boundries


County


Michigan's county boundaries are represented in this shapefile. Use them to overlay other files onto or just for reference. This shapefile was created by dissolving the Town-Range-Section shapefiles for each of Michigan's counties.

Fisheries Management Units


The boundary lines for the Fisheries Management Units are delimited here. The Eastern and Western Lake Superior Management Units are differentiated in this file, which was provided by the Lake Huron GIS Project (modified from a Michigan Spatial Data Library Product).

Great Lakes Statistical Grids


These delineations were taken from the Michgian Geographic Data Library. Lakes Huron, Michigan, and Superior grids and management units are available.

Shoreline


These delineations were taken from the Michgian Geographic Data Library. Files for Lakes Erie, Michigan, and St. Clair, as well as Saginaw Bay, are available.

State Boundary


This shapefile was created by dissolving the shapefile of Michigan counties.

Town Range


This shapefile was created by merging the Town-Range shapefiles for each of Michigan's counties.

Town Range Section


The perimeters for the Town Range Sections are delineated in this shapefile. You can use them for reference or overlay this file onto others. This shapefile was created by merging the Town-Range-Section shapefiles for each of Michigan's counties.

Watersheds


Multiple shapefiles depicting watershed boundaries in Michigan were derrived from multiple agencies.

USGS 1:24,000 Watersheds (8 digit HUCs):
Michigan Watersheds - The boundary lines for the 8-digit Hydrologic Unit Codes (HUCs) for the state of Michigan, provided by the Michigan DEQ Land and Water Management Division.

MDNR Fisheries Division's Major Watersheds:
Major Watersheds of Michigan provided by the Michigan DNR Fisheries Division.

MDEQ Subwatersheds:
Subwatersheds provided by the Michigan DEQ Land and Water Management Division.


Fisheries Management


Fish Collection System (FCS)


These data are available to MDNR employees and affiliates with an MDNR computer. An ODBC connection in will be required to access these data through a MS Access database.

Fish Atlas v1.1


The distribution of Michigan Fishes is documented in this Atlas (1/31/03). This dataset was created through a Natural Heritage Grant to the Institute for Fisheries Research. Distribution maps are included, along with shapefiles of sample locations and the Access database that contains the fish collection data compiled over many years by individual researchers, state employees, and as part of other projects. The Fish Atlas is available from the Michigan Geographic Data Library.

Fish Stock Sites


This shapefile contains points representing the locations at which fish were stocked by the Michigan DNR. The shapefile consists of information on the site name, location (in decimal degrees, coordinates in Michigan Georef), town range and section, and name of the waterbody where the fish were stocked. This file was downloaded from the Michigan Geographic Data Library.

Fish Stocking Information System


Access to the DNR Fisheries Division Databases is granted on a read-only basis to Fisheries Division employees. Live links to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources Fisheries Division databases allows the use to query for fish collection-related information for the state of Michigan. Tables which deal with Fish Collection information begin with "FIS_".

National Hydrography Dataset (NHD)


The NHD is an hydrographic dataset which combines point, linear, and areal hydrographic features into a single dataset that connects them through a flow network. Cooperators working with the USGS and the US EPA have created this dataset with the intention of it becoming utilized nationwide.

Inland Lakes


Point location of each lake
Each lake polygon over 10 acres was given a point that was located near the outflow of each drainage lake, or near the center of each seepage lake. This dataset was created at the Institute for Fisheries Research.

Polygons representing shapes of lakes
Polygon representations of the lake are from the MI Framework, which was derived from MIRIS information and improved by altering lake representations and adding a number lakes - approximately 65,000+ lakes are present. The NHD is an hydrographic dataset which combines point, linear, and areal hydrographic features into a single dataset that connects them through a flow network. Cooperators working with the USGS and the US EPA have created this dataset with the intention of it becoming utilized nationwide.

Lakes Images of Contours, Bottom Type & Vegetation


Maps of the lake bathymetry, vegetation, and bottom types were created at the IFR in the 1930s through the 1960s. The Michigan United Conservation Corps scanned these maps in 2001. These maps can be viewed electronically. Once they are georeferenced, they can be overlaid onto other spatial datasets to provide additional information on lakes. Michigan State Industries (MSI) georeferenced and digitized ~200 lake maps, students at Michigan State University (MSU) produced another 30 or so lake maps, and students at the University of Michigan produced an additional 40 or so. The Michigan center for Geographic Information (CGI) georeferenced over 600 lake maps and their features.

Lakes Bathymetry and Volume Calculations


Lake bathymetry in grid format were used to calculate volume and littoral zone percentages. Nearly 1,000 lake maps have been digitized by various sources (MSI, MSU and UM students, and CGI) and have volume and littoral zone percentages calculated.

Lake Attribute Tables


This database contains lake information for the lakes of Michigan. This dataset was comiled at the Institute for Fisheries Research and had the goal of converting numerous paper datasets into tabular data.

Streams


Coldwater Stream Designations

These shapefiles are organized by 8-digit Watershed and contain fields denoting MDNR Designations as Coldwater Streams, MDEQ Legal Designations as Coldwater Streams, and Fishing Regulations. These files were digitized off the large-format paper maps in 1999 at the Institute for Fisheries Research.

Darcy 1.0 (100m resolution) & Darcy I/O

This ArcView project file was created and downloaded from the Michigan Geopgraphic Data Library. This is an early version of the Darcy model put forth by the Michigan Rivers Inventory (MRI) project.

Natural and Scenic River Designations

Each Natural River represents the reaches of river that have been designated as a state Natural River under Part 305 of PA451. Designated river segments are subject to individual river management plans and accompanying administrative rules that affect management of both public and private property.

Valley Segments

This shapefile represents the Valley Segment Ecological Classification created at the IFR.

VSEC Basins

This polygon shapefile was created by digitizing basins for each Valley Segment in the Lower Peninsula. DEMs assisted in the delineation of the catchment areas.
